PHASTAR's 2020 Year in Review

2020 was an unprecedented year in many ways, for everybody around the world. The coronavirus pandemic has seen businesses face disruptions to their usual schedules, changing the way we interact with potential customers, how our staff work and for many, if we can open at all.  For PHASTAR, the challenges of 2020 have shown us the true strength of our team and their adaptability, positivity and determination.

2020 saw many highlights for PHASTAR; February saw us open our third US office in San Diego, California, giving us the ability to offer sponsors on the ground, local biometrics experts underpinned by a larger global team. In June, we opened our first office in Tokyo, Japan, bringing our expert led, specialised biometrics services to our growing Asia customer base. This office thrived in 2020 and continues to grow into 2021. Our China office will be opening in 2021 and we look forward to that meeting the same success as Japan.

As the rules to office working changed in early 2020, we mobilised. We set up all staff to work remotely, offering additional support where needed. The global PHASTAR team rallied together and because of this we saw little impact on our day to day business – a true testament to the abilities of our staff! We kept in touch virtually and even hosted our virtual summer party with great success. We worked with sponsors to discuss modifications of trials in light of the pandemic, helping with all aspects of their trials from rapid database development, efficient clinical trial design/ review to communicating with regulatory agencies.

With the absence of the face to face meetings and conferences that usually fill our summer, we embarked on a mission to host our own, virtual event, bringing the brightest minds of statistics and data science together in our PHASTAR Life Science Summit (PLSS). We were bowled over with the response – we had 400 attendees from over 40 countries join us over two days, listening to insightful discussions from Janet Wittes, Stephen Senn, Thomas Jaki, Frank Harrell and more! You can find all talks from PLSS 2020 here.

More successes came throughout the year, with us reaching several important milestones as a business. From our business intelligence, in 2020 we became the second largest specialised biometrics CRO globally, and the largest in the UK. Since our inception in 2007, we have fast become the biometrics CRO of choice for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies worldwide, owing to our reputation for quality; our technically expert and dynamic employees; and our focus on getting it right first time, every time.

We know that true growth isn’t one that focuses on finances alone – even though we have exceeded our targets year on year since our inception - growth is also about quality headcount. We only hire the best talent and have strategically grown in new locations to match where that talent pool is, increasing our global footprint and offering sponsors ‘on-the-ground’ experienced staff at their convenience. Experienced statisticians, programmers, data managers and data scientists are drawn to work in a company where they feel valued, where they are exposed to other technical experts and feel supported in their roles. People want to work for a company that offers the opportunity to learn and develop, work on interesting, insightful projects, whilst utilising cutting-edge technologies to make a real difference to patients’ lives. People want to work at PHASTAR.

Our several influential senior hires over the past few years including a Managing Director, VP of Statistical Consultancy and Head of Data Science, has set us apart from the competition in terms of industry leadership. We now have an unbeatable senior team of industry leaders on our management team, situated across the globe in each of our 12 office locations.

We know that our success comes down to the work that our team at PHASTAR is doing: the on-time, error-free trial reporting, the optimal design of clinical trials, the utilisation of cutting edge data science techniques and the delivery of clean, efficient data for our sponsors, combining for the ultimate goal of working to bring life-improving medicines to the market.

Whilst we celebrate the successes of 2020, we know our work is not yet done. We are on a journey to become the global market leading biometrics CRO. Watch this space for the latest developments!
