SAS ART 2015

SAS Art Competition 2015 - Open to All.

Did you know that you can use SAS to create interesting graphics and even conceptual art? We would like to invite all SAS users to take part in a competition to create interesting art and graphics. The winning entry will receive a £500 shopping token (which can be donated to your chosen charity, if preferred). The entries should be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 5pm UK time on Friday 27th November 2015. We would ideally like the artwork to be printable in large format (A0 or 1 metre square approximately), although the file can be sent as either a bitmap or JPEG file in smaller format. Please include the SAS code and graphic in your email, along with any other explanation required to understand and/or interpret the artwork. All entries should incorporate at least one of the colours in the PHASTAR logo (the darker colour is cx73002E and the lighter colour is CXAF95A6).

This year we will have an additional category: a £200 shopping token will be awarded to the best Christmas themed SAS generated art, and will also feature on PHASTAR Christmas cards this year.

PHASTAR Open Office Evening

PHASTAR Open Office Evening in London.

PHASTAR held an open office evening in our new London offices this week. Due to our continued success and growth, we moved to new facilities earlier this year, and invited leaders in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries to visit our offices. Our CEO, Kevin Kane, talked about the history of the company, the principles behind the quality of our work, and our growth, which is fuelled by repeat business from satisfied customers.

The attendees were treated to a talk by Simon Singh on "The Mathematical Secrets of The Simpsons", revealing some quite complex mathematical problems that are hidden in the popular cartoon. Simon has worked as a producer and director in BBC programmes such as Tomorrow’s World and Horizon. After publishing an article about a chiropractic, he was famously sued by the British Chiropractic Association in a libel case that lasted two years, and which he eventually won. Simon now works closely with Sense About Science, a charitable organisation that works with scientists and members of the public to change public debates and to equip people to make sense of science and evidence. Simon's talk was humourous and well received.

We were all also entertained by The London String Trio who played on the night - they have performed at the Royal Variety Show, The Brit Awards and played with a variety of artists including Katherine Jenkins, Michael Buble, Cher and Rhianna as well as many more.

YSM 2015

PHASTAR are a corporate sponsor at the YSM 2015 in Cardiff.

We will be exhibiting at the event, so come and visit us at our stand. We are looking forward to meeting the young career statisticians and having an evening at Cardiff Castle!

PHASTAR attended BIO conference.

PHASTAR attended last week's BIO conference in Philadelphia, attended by over 15000 pharma and biotech professionals. There were many heart-warming stories of successful individuals and organisations making progress in the fight against various diseases. Talk of innovation in biotech was rife, such as combination immunotherapy, and how big data will impact drug development. Another hightlight was Bill Clinton giving a talk alongside the conference calling for "disruptors" in biotech.

The BIO conference confirmed that PHASTAR are moving in the right direction with our current expansion plans to the US. In the state of New Jersey alone, one presented noted that there are 3100 biotech and pharma companies, a number that exceeds biotech companies in the UK alone. PHASTAR's expansion plans are well underway, and we plan to have a US office open by the end of 2015. We will also attend JSM in Seattle in August to further learn about the US market for biostatistical services.

During the conference, we met over 30 companies, through the formal partnering system provided by BIO, but also through informal meetings at the numerous networking events, such as the conference closing event kindly sponsored by J&J. Whilst there are so many biotech companies attending the conference, it is also obvious that there is a need for improved statistical support in this arena. Companies are often presenting their results to attract investors and there were many statistical problems in the way that the data were presented.
