In our “Meet the Team” series, we highlight the talented individuals who drive Phastar’s success. Each team member brings unique skills, experience, and passion to their role, working together to deliver high-quality biometrics and data science solutions in clinical research. Below, we share their career journey, insights, and the impact they make every day.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to join Phastar?
I completed my undergraduate degree in Maths & Statistics in 2012 before a career as a business/finance statistician. I then went on to do a part-time Masters in Statistics with Medical Application from 2015-2018 whilst continuing my work as a consultant business statistician for several companies. In 2019 I did a predoctoral fellowship with Imperial Clinical Trials Unit researching the use of Bayesian methods for rare disease and small populations trials. I moved over to Phastar in 2021 as a way to continue my research work whilst also gaining the experience of working on trials themselves including on regulatory and design work through my consultancy projects.
What is your role at Phastar, and what do you enjoy most about your day-to-day responsibilities?
I am a consultant statistician at Phastar, working directly with some of our small biotech and pharma clients helping design their trials, especially focusing on early phase and Bayesian trials. Working closely with clients as part of their team means getting to really connect with the importance of the trials and be able to be as invested as our clients on the successful launch of their trials, assisting them with their discussion with regulatory agencies and learning about their therapeutic area.
When not working with clients I also co-chair our company’s Bayesian Working Group, working with others within the company on expanding our expertise on Bayesian statistics through research projects and developing training for the wider company.
What has been your favorite moment or achievement at Phastar so far?
One of the greatest joys I have had at Phastar was helping one client get from concept to first patient in on their first ever trial, it had been an absolute labor of love for them and a really worthwhile process helping get them to such an important landmark as a company.
Similarly, being able to present on my research work has always been a really important part of my work to me, it is a great way to both learn about what is going on within research and industry, whilst also keeping contacts across both industry and academia, helped by meeting my partner at a conference 2 years ago.
What opportunities for growth or professional development have you had since joining the team?
Phastar have been brilliant at encouraging my growth within the business as a client facing statistician performing complex problem solving and trial design for my clients; whilst also allowing me the time to continue research and development in Bayesian statistics. This comes with being able to allocate some of my time each month to my research work and encouraging me to attend conferences and produce internal training and external facing webinars.
What do you value most about working at Phastar?
I value the support that I receive at Phastar, including time to develop my skills, alongside the trust and autonomy to perform my work for my clients.
