In our “Meet the Team” series, we highlight the talented individuals who drive Phastar’s success. Each team member brings unique skills, experience, and passion to their role, working together to deliver high-quality biometrics and data science solutions in clinical research. Below, we share their career journey, insights, and the impact they make every day.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to join Phastar?

My name is Mercy Mutua, and I’m based in the Kenya office. I have an MSc in Medical Statistics from the University of Nairobi. I joined Phastar in 2022 as a graduate statistician, at a time when I was actively seeking an organization that would allow me to both apply and grow my statistical skills in a meaningful way.

Phastar stood out to me because of its reputation for excellence in handling clinical trial data. From the start, I was drawn to the supportive work environment, technical focus, and the opportunity to be part of impactful clinical research.  Looking back, joining Phastar has been one of the best career decisions I’ve made

What is your role at Phastar, and what do you enjoy most about your day-to-day responsibilities?

I work as a statistician at Phastar, primarily supporting Oncology studies across Phase I–III clinical trials. My role involves developing Statistical Analysis Plans (SAPs), creating mock shells, performing data analysis, and contributing to clinical trial reporting. My role is both dynamic and rewarding, there’s always something new to learn, whether it’s a complex statistical method or delving into diverse therapeutic areas, which keeps the work both challenging and exciting.

One of the things I enjoy most is working with a team of brilliant, highly skilled professionals who are always willing to share knowledge and support one another. Knowing that the work we do contributes to advancing medical research and ultimately improving patient outcomes gives me a strong sense of purpose. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be part of projects that have a real impact on society.

What has been your favorite moment or achievement at Phastar so far?

One of my favorite achievements at Phastar has been being a shadow lead for a complex clinical trial project from start to finish. It was a significant milestone in my career-not just because of the technical challenges involved, but also because it gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams.

Seeing the final results come together was incredibly rewarding. What made it even more meaningful was the support I received from colleagues and mentors throughout the process.

What opportunities for growth or professional development have you had since joining the team?

I’ve had the opportunity to take on leadership roles for various studies, which has helped me deepen my understanding of the clinical trial process. I’ve also been able to mentor junior statisticians, which has been both fulfilling and a great way to reinforce my own knowledge.

What do you value most about working at Phastar?

Another key aspect I appreciate is the flexible working schedule, which allows for a healthy work-life balance without compromising on productivity or impact. It’s refreshing to be part of an organization that not only prioritizes high-quality work but also recognizes the importance of employee well-being and career progression.
