In our “Meet the Team” series, we highlight the talented individuals who drive Phastar’s success. Each team member brings unique skills, experience, and passion to their role, working together to deliver high-quality biometrics and data science solutions in clinical research. Below, we share their career journey, insights, and the impact they make every day.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to join Phastar?
I completed a BSc in Mathematics followed by an MSc in Statistics at Lancaster University, UK. It was during my studies that I realized I wanted my career to align with my values: making a meaningful impact while working on intellectually engaging challenges, which led me to medical statistics.
Before joining Phastar, I spent nine years working in academic clinical trials units, gaining extensive experience in trial design and statistical analysis. I was ready for a new challenge and wanted to transition to a CRO rather than big pharma. Phastar stood out as the ideal choice, not only as an award-winning biometrics and data science CRO but also because of its reputation for excellence and its specialist focus.
At Phastar, I knew I wouldn’t have to take a step back in my career. Instead, my expertise would be valued. The opportunity to work alongside a global team of data specialists, applying advanced statistical methods to accelerate drug development, was exactly what I was looking for. Behind every data point is a patient waiting for treatment, and I’m proud to be part of a company that transforms complex data into clear, actionable intelligence, bringing life-changing therapies to patients faster.
What is your role at Phastar, and what do you enjoy most about your day-to-day responsibilities?
As a Statistics Manager at Phastar, my role encompasses a range of responsibilities. I lead multiple studies within the project-based services (PBS) group and oversee several DMC studies, attending meetings and coordinating with DMC members. Additionally, I contribute to process improvement efforts, focusing on reducing inefficiencies, improving workflows, and ensuring quality delivery with a “right first time” approach.
I also serve as the lead for the early phase working group, where we have presented external webinars, initiated collaborations, and are currently developing standardized processes and templates to streamline our work. Beyond project leadership, I manage a team of seven statisticians, providing guidance and support in their professional development.
My role also involves providing statistical consultancy to a range of clients, including conducting sample size calculations, offering study design advice, reviewing protocols, and supporting DMC/SRC charters. Additionally, I participate in mentoring through the PSI scheme, helping to support the next generation of statisticians in the industry.
What has been your favorite moment or achievement at Phastar so far?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing the real-world impact of our efforts. I’ve had the privilege of working on studies for a major pharmaceutical company that have delivered excellent results, ultimately bringing meaningful benefits to patients. Witnessing our hard work translate into real improvements in people’s lives is truly inspiring.
One of my favorite projects has been collaborating with a biotech company as they embarked on their first clinical trial. From overseeing protocol development to defending the trial design and statistical plan before the EMA, I had the opportunity to work closely with their team, spending time at their office and building a strong, productive relationship. We’re now in the study setup phase and eagerly anticipating the first patient recruitment—an exciting milestone for everyone involved.
What opportunities for growth or professional development have you had since joining the team?
When I first started out, I was fortunate to have a fantastic mentor who worked for the same client in PBS. She was incredibly supportive, always willing to answer any question, big or small, which made a huge difference in my early development.
Coming from academia, I recognized some knowledge gaps that I wanted to address quickly. To bridge them, I took the initiative to get more involved in programming than a typical statistician would, helping me gain a deeper understanding of the CRO approach to clinical trial analysis, particularly around CDISC standards.
In 2024, I attended the International Clinical Trials Methodology Conference (ICTMC), which was a great opportunity to engage with new methodologies and industry trends. Transitioning from Principal Statistician to Statistics Manager gave me the space to explore early-phase projects, initiatives, and process improvements in more depth, an area I’ve really enjoyed developing.
What do you value most about working at Phastar?
What I value most about working at Phastar is the people. The support from both management and colleagues is unmatched, especially during times of growth and change, it’s clear that people truly matter here. I also appreciate the opportunities to take on work beyond my standard role. Exploring non-billable projects keeps things interesting and helps me stay at the top of my game.
Flexibility is another key factor. The ability to balance busy periods with time back, whether it’s a long weekend or adjusting my schedule, makes a big difference. Plus, the hybrid work setup is ideal. I get to collaborate in the office while also enjoying the comfort of working from home with my dog and two cats!
